Swachch Bharat Abhiyan : Annual Report

To mark the anniversary of "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" initiated by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi on 02-Oct-2014, we invited our staff and residents to participate in a special week long drive to celebrate the success story of the abhiyan and carry the legacy forward!!

Geetanjali hostel, was initiated into the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" by Prof. Mridula Gupta (Provost) on 2nd Oct-2014, responding to the call of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi and the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Prof. Dinesh Singh. The event was initiated with an oath taking ceremony, held in hostel premises, where the staff and residents of the hostel took oath of "cleanliness'. On the organizational level, several steps were initiated to heighten the level of awareness among residents and staff to maintain "swachch" surroundings. These included routine checks by the authorities to observe lapses in cleanliness. Also included were activities like, putting up slogans, banners and advisories to act as a constant reminder to residents on the importance of cleanliness. As part of the drive, the entire hostel was repaired and repainted, which not only helped in prevention of seepage and accumulation of water but also brightened the surroundings, motivating our residents further to continue keeping these areas clean. Measures were taken to streamline the cleaning schedules of the roofs, water tanks, gardens, bathrooms, common areas like varendhas and galleries. A large amount of items which had reached the end of their usefulness were "written-off" through the official process, leading to freeing up of occupied space, therefore de-cluttering the hostel premises. This free space can now be used for additional facilities like creating a Gymnasium or reading room for the residents. To celebrate the year long activity and the success of 'swachch bharat abhiyan" several activities were organized. The hostel staff was invited and motivated to spend an hour each day for sprucing up their surroundings. The staff members participated actively as evident from the photographs below. Multiple options of contributing to the event were offered to the resident-students. They were invited to participate in the cleaning drive, both in their own rooms and in the common areas. It was modeled as a fun competition, where the individual room were later inspected and the best rooms (in terms of neatness, organization and decorations) were selected for a prize. Students were asked to send in their selfies or pictures while cleaning their rooms, which will also be selected for a prize. The artists among the students were also given a chance to express their creativity through poems, essays, banners and slogans related to Mahatma Gandhi's motto of "Cleanliness is next to Godliness". Multiple entries have been received in this competition and the best entries will be selected, displayed and awarded. Few photos sent in by the students are attached.
